Short answer
When an AC stops cooling in a Qatar summer, the cause is usually one of seven things: clogged filters, a dust-choked outdoor unit, low refrigerant from a leak, a faulty thermostat or sensor, a frozen coil, a failing capacitor or compressor, or blocked drainage and leaking ducts. Two of them you can check yourself in five minutes. The rest need a technician — and in 45°C+ heat, the longer a struggling AC runs, the more damage it does. Home Cares Hub repairs ACs across Doha, 24/7 — visits start from QAR 100, final price agreed after inspection.
The 7 causes — and the fix for each
1. Clogged air filters
Signs: weak airflow, room cools slowly, dust smell.
Fix: This one is yours. Switch the AC off, slide out the filters, wash them with water, dry them fully and refit. In Doha’s dusty conditions, rinse filters every 2–4 weeks in summer. If cooling returns, you have found the problem.
2. Outdoor unit choked with dust and sand
Signs: the outdoor unit sounds strained, cooling drops on the hottest afternoons, the unit feels extremely hot.
Fix: Keep plants, boxes and covers away from the outdoor unit so air can move. A proper fix is a technician’s coil wash — Doha dust and sandstorms pack the condenser fins with dirt, and a blocked condenser cannot dump heat, so the AC blows warm.
3. Low refrigerant because of a leak
Signs: air is cool but never cold, ice on the pipes, hissing sounds, cooling gets worse week by week.
Fix: Technician only. Low refrigerant always means a leak — topping up gas without finding and sealing the leak just buys a few weeks. A proper repair is: find the leak, seal it, vacuum the system, then recharge with the correct refrigerant.
4. Thermostat or sensor problems
Signs: the AC stops before the room is cool, runs constantly without stopping, or the displayed temperature makes no sense.
Fix: Check the thermostat is set to Cool (not Fan or Dry), set it a few degrees lower, and replace remote batteries. If the behaviour continues, the sensor or control board needs a technician.
5. Frozen evaporator coil
Signs: ice visible on the indoor unit or pipes, water dripping, airflow almost stops, then a puddle when it melts.
Fix: Switch the AC fully off and let the ice melt completely — running it frozen makes things worse. Freezing is usually caused by clogged filters or low refrigerant, so if it happens twice, book a technician to fix the root cause.
6. Failing capacitor or compressor
Signs: the outdoor fan or compressor does not start, humming or clicking from the outdoor unit, the breaker trips, cooling stops suddenly.
Fix: Technician only — these are electrical parts, and Qatar summer heat is exactly what kills capacitors. A capacitor swap is quick; a dead compressor is the one expensive failure, which is why catching causes 1–5 early matters.
7. Blocked drain line or leaking ducts
Signs: water dripping from the indoor unit, musty smell, one room cool and the next warm.
Fix: A blocked condensate drain needs clearing (a technician flushes the line and checks the tray). Leaking or poorly insulated ducts in a hot ceiling space quietly waste cooling — ducts need sealing and insulation checks.
What to check before you call anyone (5-minute checklist)
- Thermostat on Cool, set below the current room temperature.
- Filters clean and dry.
- All vents and flaps open, nothing blocking the indoor unit.
- Outdoor unit running, with clear space around it.
- Breaker on, and no ice on the unit.
If all five are fine and the air is still warm, the fault is inside the system — that is technician work.
How to stop it happening next summer
- Service the AC before summer (March–April), not after it fails in July.
- Rinse filters every 2–4 weeks during the dusty months.
- Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear all year.
- Fix small cooling losses early — a struggling AC in Qatar heat wears out its compressor fast.
- Run the AC regularly even in winter so seals and parts stay in working order.
How much does AC repair cost in Doha?
Visits start from QAR 100. The final price depends on the fault — a capacitor, a gas recharge after leak repair, and a compressor are very different jobs — so at Home Cares Hub the price is fixed and agreed with you after inspection, before any work begins.
FAQs
Why is my AC blowing warm air in summer?
The most common causes in Qatar are clogged filters, a dust-blocked outdoor unit and low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filters and thermostat first; if the air stays warm, the system needs a technician.
Can low AC gas just be topped up?
It can, but it will leak out again. Low refrigerant always means a leak — the lasting fix is to find and seal the leak first, then recharge.
Is it safe to run an AC that has ice on it?
No. Switch it off and let the ice melt fully. Running a frozen unit can damage the compressor.
When should I service my AC in Qatar?
Once a year before summer — March or April — plus filter rinsing every 2–4 weeks in the dusty season.
